Transponders keys: Transponders keys where introduced in about 1994 by vehicle manufactures to combat joy riders and car thieves. A transponder is a tiny microprocessor an radio receiver/ transmitter unit situated inside the head of the key it is complete self-contained and does not need a battery to power it. When the key is placed in the ignition and turned , on a radio signal is transmitted by the vehicle, via a aerial loop around the ignition switch this is received by the key, which then converts it into an electrical current enabling the microprocessor to transmit the key's unique code back to the vehicle. All this takes place while the key is passing through the " accessory" position on its way to turning the ignition on. After receiving this information the engine control unit (ECU) compares it with a list of keys already programed. If it matches, the ignition and fuel circuits are activated. If not then the vehicle will not respond and will not start.
Auto-locks has invested in the equipment to make transponders keys and copy keys if available and reprogrammed the car (ECU). so old keys can cleared from the (ECU) new keys added when lost or stolen all this can be done at the road side.
